For those of us who enjoy playing with the idea of societal collapse, this story in the Telegraph offers a stark reminder that the reality is never too far away. The health of global capitalism is so bound to the beliefs of the investors that a growing panic could bring everything to its knees in no time. Everything we do now, the whole edifice of decadent pleasure that has grown up over the last 250 years could come crumbling down if enough people believe that it will.

The doom predicted in article is nothing compared with the lucid nightmares in most of the comments. It appears that we have spent so long fantasising about the destruction of civilization that some are almost welcoming the reality. Depressingly, most seem assured that the collapse will turn into a brutal Mad Max style battle of resources, with the ones with the guns winning. There are other alternatives and I am surprised that in the post-Communist world so few lefties have outlined future societal possibilities. The left, it seems, is so entrenched in the industrial revolution that it can’t imagine a world beyond oil.
Of course, the current problems could be overcome if only someone could make decent electric transportation, better solar panels, and everyone went vegetarian - but that isn’t likely to happen anytime soon. Better get the order for soylent green in now.
