Getting back into feeds

Ever since I went on an information diet last year, my rss feedreading has diminished drastically. At one point I had about 120 feeds in my list - including things like Daily Slurp (20 posts per day) and CSS Mania (10 posts per day) - it was all too much. I remember returning from a week in New York and discovering I had something like 1400 posts to get through!

Just as writing too often alienates your readers, reading too much alienated yourself from the world. I deleted every single feed except 10 that I consider essential. This equated to about one item per day, as they were people who didn’t write very often, which was fine. However, gradually my appetite for such things increased, and I’m now up to around 20, including: K-Punk, Dickon, Rhodri, Michael Johnson, Richard Herring, and Will Self.

Is there anyone else you recommend who writes well enough to be considered essential reading?

By the way, for fans of my Blue Tongue poster, here is a card I made for my friend Chris, who turned 29 today. Happy birthday, Chris.

Which feed reader do you favour, Neil?

Google Reader is pretty solid, as long as you use Jon Hick’s userstyles theme.

If you’re around for the Mardi Gras thing on Byers Road tomorrow (kick off at 2) give me a jingle.
